Do 'penis pumps' increase size? Here's what experts have to say
A better sex life has often been associated with a lot of aspects among which lasting longer, having a stronger erection and a bigger penis have been a priority for a lot of men for a long time.
While research has proven that size of the penis doesn’t really make a huge difference, men have been trying to figure out ways for penis enlargement, one of which is a vacuum constriction device, commonly known as the ‘penis pump’.
Invented way back in 1874 by a doctor named John King, the device has for long been associated with increasing penis length and has also been marketed by several firms in the similar manner, but is there any factual evidence suggesting an increase in size or is it just another myth?
Traditionally known as a solution for erectile dysfunction, the pump is designed to draw blood to the shaft of the penis, in order to help a person secure an erection. But with time men have increasingly been using it to enlarge their members.
But experts say that the size change is only temporary, since the use of the pump on any part of the body can cause the area to swell but the organ goes back to its normal size in some time. At the most, the pump has shown minor effects in some cases but it is not recommended if one is unhappy about penis size.
Meanwhile several groups selling penis pumps claim that it does work and the idea mostly centres on over-expansion of penile tissues, in which stretching the member is said to cause more micro-tears which are repaired by the body by growing new cells.
But experts reject such claims and say that the idea of increasing length through micro tears is worrisome as it can lead to a condition where scar tissue develops inside the penis causing curved and painful erections.
On the other hand the Journal of Sex Medicine suggests that men have nothing to worry about when it comes to penis size since the average penis size of 5.6 inches is a good enough fit for women.
